Adding Image References

Malloy Studio allows you to upload image references to help generate motion graphics with AI more accurately.

There are two supported ways to use image references:

  1. Copy / Layout Reference

  2. Instruction-Based Reference

You must clearly state which type you are using in your prompt.

If you do not specify the reference type, results may be inconsistent.

When you want to generate motion graphics with AI based on an existing design, clarity matters.

Copy / Layout Reference

A copy (layout) reference is an image that shows the visual structure you want to recreate.

Use this when you want to generate motion graphics with AI that follow a specific layout.

This can include:

  • A UI layout

  • A lower third design

  • A chart style

  • A card layout

  • A static animation frame

When using a copy reference, Malloy Studio analyzes:

  • Structure

  • Positioning

  • Hierarchy

  • Layout style

It does not create pixel-perfect duplicates.
It recreates a similar structured layout.

You must clearly state that it is a copy layout reference.

Example

This tells the system to prioritize structure when generating motion graphics with AI.

Instruction-Based Reference

An instruction-based reference includes notes or markings that explain behavior.

Use this when you want to generate motion graphics with AI based on visual instructions.

This may include:

  • Arrows showing motion direction

  • Written timing notes

  • Highlighted areas

  • Labeled animation steps

When using this type, Malloy Studio reads:

  • The visual layout

  • The instructions inside the image

You must clearly state that it is an instruction-based reference.

Example

This ensures both layout and behavior are interpreted correctly.

Important Rule

Always specify the reference type in your prompt:

  • Say “copy layout reference”

  • Or say “instruction-based reference”

Do not assume the system will guess.

Clear reference intent improves how you generate motion graphics with AI.

What Image References Do Not Do

Image references do not:

  • Create pixel-perfect copies

  • Guarantee exact animation timing

  • Replace clear written prompts

Images guide structure.

Your prompt still defines:

  • Behavior

  • Layout logic

  • Editable controls

Best Practice

When uploading an image to generate motion graphics with AI:

  1. State the reference type clearly

  2. Define what should appear on the Canvas

  3. Define what should be editable in the Controls

Clear structure and clear instructions lead to better results.
